La Experiencia
If there is one place that embodies the Caribbean dream, it is Saona Island. With its infinite rows of coconut palms leaning over the sea and water so crystal clear it seems unreal, this jewel of the Cotubanamá National Park is much more than just a beach: it is a total disconnection from the outside world.
🌟 A Journey Between Deep Blues and Dominican Rhythm
The adventure starts in the picturesque town of Bayahíbe. From here, you have two ways to conquer paradise: the adrenaline of a speedboat, which allows you to arrive faster and enjoy more time on the sand, or the relaxation of a catamaran, where bachata music, rum, and the sea breeze prepare your spirit for what's to come.[1, 4]
The first mandatory stop is the Palmilla Natural Pool, a sandbar in the middle of the sea where the water barely reaches your waist. Here you can see the famous giant starfish, but remember: look but don't touch! Keeping them underwater is vital to protecting their home. Then, we head to the island to enjoy pristine beaches like Canto de la Playa, where time seems to have stopped between the white sand and the coral reefs.
🗺️ How to get there and Logistics
Getting to Saona Island requires some planning as it is located on the east coast, far from the capital's noise.
- Estimated time: From Santo Domingo, the land journey to Bayahíbe takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes via the Autovía del Este highway. From Punta Cana, you will be at the port in about 50 minutes.
- Recommended vehicle: If traveling on your own, a sedan or SUV is perfect, as the road is in excellent condition. If you are coming from Santo Domingo and prefer public transport, take the Expreso Romana bus and then a local minibus in La Romana toward Bayahíbe.
- Sea logistics: All tours depart from the Port of Bayahíbe between 8:30 AM and 9:30 AM. Don't be late—the boat won't wait!.
💡 The Go Visit Tip: If you are looking for an authentic experience, choose a tour that visits the village of Mano Juan. There you can visit the sea turtle sanctuary and, for a small extra fee, order a fresh grilled lobster for lunch. It is a priceless delicacy!.
